Mercedes Cortés Melchor is an organic farmer from Xico Viejo, a small town nestled in the heart of the cloud forest (Totonac/Nahua Territory). Her farm lies on land that is part of the Antigua Watershed, and the water that flows by her house travels downstream to the urban center of Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico.

Mercedes Cortés Melchor es una productora agroecológica de Xico Viejo, una comunidad anidada entre los senderos del bosque de niebla (territorio Totonaca/Nahua). Su rancho se encuentra en la Cuenca de la Antigua, y el agua que corre por su terreno viaja rio abajo hacia el centro urbano de Coatepec, Veracruz, México.
Before she built her first greenhouse, Mercedes never imagined that she would be the sole breadwinner of her family. Thanks to her valiant efforts and the help of groups like SENDAS (Pathways and Encounters for Sustainable and Autonomous Development), Mercedes can now rest assured that her daughters can grow up eating healthy food and that her husband doesn’t have to travel to the city to look for work.

Antes que construyo su primer macro túnel, Mercedes no se imaginaba que su trabajo sería el sostén económico de su familia. Gracias a sus valientes esfuerzos y con la ayuda de grupos como SENDAS (Senderos y Encuentros de Desarrollo Autónomo y Sustentable), Mercedes puede estar segura de que sus hijas van a crecer sanas y que su esposo no va a tener que viajar a la ciudad para trabajar.
Besides the economic gains, Mercedes is very much aware that her actions have a ripple effect throughout her community. Through her regenerative and sustainable practices, she is protecting the biodiversity and the water of the Antigua Watershed.

The series follows Earth Guardians from the Antigua Watershed in Veracruz, Mexico (Totonac/Nahua Territory). From the river sentinels who stopped the Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht S.A., to local beekeepers, the series explores how water protectors and organic producers can join forces to create a regenerative future for the entire region.
